Girl Scout - "Operator" and "Same Kids". A Pre-Album singles review.

Ahead of their album "Brink" - set to release on March 20th, Swedish band "Girl Scout" have released two very strong singles, leaving fans desperately counting down the days until their album release.

The first track I will be discussing is their most recent release, Operator. The track starts, and oozes Girl Scout, the familiar riffs, but fresh. One thing that I love about Girl Scout is the idea that you can always tell it's their music, but the songs never sound the same. It's hard to find a band who don't try too hard to replicate their own sound, but Girl Scout seems to pull this off flawlessly.

The concept of this song has a fun quirk to it, a topic which is idiosyncratic to what most songs are written about today. Imagine what it would be like if telephone operators still existed but they sounded really hot over the phone? The lyrics of this track highlight an obsession with this phone operator that is so absurd it is comical. "Oh operator, is it true that you clock out at five"/"Punch in your number, I got it memorized". This style of lyrics continues throughout the single, and i really enjoy the lighthearted tone to it. I feel as if this track perfectly encapsulates the feeling of having an odd crush on someone you shouldn't, and it could easily be the plot of a new Bridget Jones movie! The robotic sound effects throughout, such as the beeps and the computer like fading noise in the outro really adds to this track, tying it together as a solid 8/10.

The next pre-album single, Same Kids is a truly beautiful song, released on October 16th 2025, the track deeply resonates with me. Exploring themes of nostalgia and a remorseful wish to have known those you have connected with later in life throughout your childhood. Lead singer Emma Jansson reflects on nothing ever feeling like a real home to her, until later in life, when she found her people through interests like music and physical media. As someone who has always surrounded themselves with music, I too have experienced that feeling, and the friends I have made because of my favourite artists, I have an unbreakable bond with. This song is so relevant to the current music industry, especially with fan culture rapidly on the rise. I like to believe that this is the intention the band had behind the song, everyone being able to find someone to dedicate it to. It's a perfect song to listen to as an escape, it's hard to not catch yourself thinking about someone who holds a special place in your heart, or a unforgettable moment you have experienced due to your interests. Throughout the track, there are constant references to how closely the minds of those who care for each other work "We were one, and we could read each other's minds".

This track is not just a love letter to the world of deep connections. It touches on acceptance within yourself, especially while growing old, accepting that even if you are hurting - "if we are not getting better we learn to take more" - you can take this period of pain and learn how to help others, and go through the same thing at a later point in you life, but worse, and still be able to overcome it. Not only this but it dwells on how finally feeling accepted within what you love, brings out the inner child in you which might have never gotten that validation. Again, this song could not be released at a better time, it has become a common theme throughout all media to reflect on younger years, and really try to give your younger self all the things it never got to have/experience. Overall, I would give this track a 10/10, and i hope to see more themes like this being explored in the album later this year.
