Girl Apocrypha - 'Thank God!' A Review.

If you don't know Girl Apocrypha already, you are clearly new here. But, you may not know anything about her new single - “Thank God!” and I can guarantee by the end of this review, this track is going to be the only thing you're thinking about. 

“Thank God!” by Girl Apocrypha exquisitely explores the everlasting grief of losing a friendship that you once cared deeply for, whilst also recognising the strength that loneliness brings, hardening your skin, even if you aren’t quite ready for it. The hazy sound alongside the distortion on the ends of the verses and throughout the bridge make the song feel like a memory that is slowly fading. This perfectly reflects the song's meaning, with her words being drowned out, demonstrating the grief of friendship loss, the transition into loneliness. 

I am extremely obsessed with the lyricism that Emia has produced here, especially through the following lyrics:

I see you in branches moving eastward in the wind 

I hear you in conversations only I begin

I feel you in clothing I’ve neglected for a year

It smells like a whisper of a rumor you were here

Something really stuck with me about listing all the senses - it emphasises the longevity of mourning a relationship with someone who you based so much of your everyday life off of, the lingering feeling of a memory spent with them that clings to you so desperately. There seems to be a very constant theme of senses applied throughout, which only further adds to the intimate feel of the track. It feels like we are Girl Apocrypha’s diary, and I am so here for that!

Sonically, this track is just astounding, from the slow bassline that creeps up with the intensity of the verses to the gorgeous cries through the vocals, it is so audibly impressive and I can't wait to see what is next for Girl Apocrypha (other than the inevitable fame and supporting Paramore - duh)
